07.10.19 - Summer research program heats up

Current SURF-IoT Fellows

The current class of 14 SURF-IoT Fellows met at CALIT2, Tuesday, July 9.

The event was an opportunity for students to meet over sandwiches and salad to discuss details and anticipate denouements for the projects they will work on during the 10-week program.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Internet of Things (SURF-IoT), provides a unique research opportunity for UC Irvine undergraduates to become immersed in research and applications related to the Internet of Things.

The introductory meeting was a familiar event for Said M. Shokair, director of UCI’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Shokair has been on hand to kick off the annual orientation session more than a dozen times since the program launched in 2005.

Shokair urged students to take initiative and “get things done,” and suggested they have honest and frank conversations with their mentors. “The role of a mentor is to coach you, not to micromanage you,” he added.

Students share information about their SURF-IoT projects during orientation meeting.

SURF-IoT is cosponsored by UROP and CALIT2. The program is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in various multidisciplinary fields related to IoT. Under the personal guidance of a UCI faculty mentor, students will gain firsthand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques.

A series of lunchtime seminars, featuring presentations by SURF-IoT mentors is aimed at enhancing dialogue about IoT systems and applications. These seminars will be held on Thursdays in CALIT2, Room 3008, and are open to the public. For dates and times, please visit the CALIT2 event listings.

At the conclusion of the program, SURF-IoT Fellows will present their research findings on August 29 at the SURF-IoT Symposium in the CALIT2 Auditorium.

“This experience is for you. It’s your opportunity to make it the best it can be,” Shokair said in closing, “so give it all you’ve got.”
